TAN Applying procedure, Document and Status check

Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number also called TAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number. The number is required to be obtained by all people who are liable for deducting or collecting tax. According to Section 203A of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The alphanumeric number is assigned by the Income Tax Department and is required to be quoted on all TDS returns. TAN is required by every individual since returns TIN facilitation centers accepts the return from Tax Deducted at source or Tax collected at source.

Applying procedure

Applying for a TAN can be done either by contacting one of the many facilitation centers or directly online by self. The steps to follow when applying for a new TAN are:

  • Firstly, visit https://www.tin-nsdl.com/services/tan/tan-introduction.html
  • Click on ‘TAN’ under the ‘services’ button
  • Click ‘Apply Online’ tab – https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/tan/form49B.html
  • Then select ‘New TAN’
  • A new page will pop up from which you can select ‘category of deductors’
  • After this, you will be directed to Form 49B
  • The form that will pop up will need to be fully filled and then click on ‘submit’
  • Once you confirm details, a screen of acknowledgement will have a drop down list that will have the following options:
  • Acknowledgement number (this will be a 14 digit code)
    • Applicant’s status
    • Applicant’s name
    • Payment details
    • Contact details
    • Specified space for signature
  • Save this acknowledgement form and take a print out of the same
  • The printout along with the required documents will then need to be sent to NSDL

Document 

The following mentioned documents need to be submitted along with the application for TAN:

  • Proof of address of the registered office
  • Passport-sized photo as per specifications
  • PAN card of the enterprise
  • TAN application form
  • Legal documents such as MOA, AOA, partnership deed, etc.

Status Check

Step–1 To check the status of TAN Application visit https://www.tin-nsdl.com/services/tan/tan-introduction.html

Step–2  Enter acknowledgment number of your TAN application and click on “Submit” button
